Homeschool Mother's Journal 9/24/11

In my life this week…
I have been so busy lately.  I started a new job, teaching violin in the evenings at a music school in the city.  I love the job, but adjusting to the new schedule is proving to be a little more difficult than I anticipated.  Kaelyn is also teething five teeth and she hasn't let me have a semi-normal night of sleep for about two weeks. She also has either allergies or a cold now, so last night she didn't do much sleeping. The lack of sleep is slowing driving me insane. Also, Sebastian and Kaelyn have a new baby cousin!  My brother and sister-in-law had their girl last Friday.  We visited them this past Sunday and marveled at how tiny baby Allyssa is.
In our homeschool this week…
We had our first co-op day yesterday.  It was the first time Sebastian was in any sort of preschool/kindergarten class.  It was an emotional roller-coaster day for him.  He was so excited to go, but when we got there he closed up.  I took him to the room and he refused to go in.  I didn't push him.  We let him start the class outside the room.  I went in the room to help and he eventually came into the room, but turned into a rock and curled up into a ball against the farthest wall.  When the globe was brought out, he uncurled and just sat on the ground, and watched the class.  Snack time brought Sebastian to the table, and crafty-crafty time got Sebastian willing to participate.  During recess I heard Sebastian laughing with the teachers, but when they went outside Sebastian started crying.  I wasn't there for this, but I was told he was crying because he wasn't allowed to go outside and then he was stuck by himself or something.  I took him outside with the other kids, but he didn't want to play kickball.  He just ran in circles with one of the other boys. I taught music and choir during the second session, so I took him to the kindergarten room and left him there with the teachers.  He did much better without me around, so I will leave him next co-op from the beginning.  He started behaving just in time for Kaelyn to decide she was done being in the nursery.  I had to teach with her on my hip!  We had our school pictures taken, and Sebastian cried when we had to leave because he was having so much fun.  It was an emotionally exhausting day for everyone.  Hopefully the next co-op day will be less emotional for everyone.

What’s working/not working for us…
We just started lesson 9 in Math-U-See Primer, which is place value (tens and units).  I didn't expect him to understand this concept, but the Decimal Street idea that is used in this curriculum is brilliant!  Sebastian figured it out and understood it immediately.  I had set aside two weeks to go over this concept, but I could move on after two days.  I love this math curriculum (and it is affordable).

I’m grateful for…
In good news, we are refinancing our home and we look to save almost $300 a month with the new payments!  That is wonderful, especially since we have had some water issues that need to be looked at, and a new floor needs to be put in since the flooding this month destroyed the tile in our hallway/den area.  God is good and is providing for us.  It might not be right away, but we have a means to save up.  Thank you, Jesus!
